In Sri Lanka self-catering accommodation is a new concept pioneered in the Aluthgama/Bentota district by the conveniently located Thumbelina Apartments.

Amazingly affordable with no compromise on convenience and personal comfort and safety, the Thumbelina Apartments are ideal for a holiday of a few days or for a longer stay, for solo travellers, couples, or families.

Close to the bus and train station at Aluthgama and on the access road to the Southern Expressway, built on two floors above the Nebula specialty supermarket, with quick access to the banks, post office and shopping centres, these self-catering apartments are not only located within reach of all amenities, they are also beautifully situated beside the Bentota River.

Entrance to the apartment block is street side, next to the Nebula Supermarket, and access is restricted to resident guests by key. Visitors can enter only by invitation. Each of the seven apartments has its own front door access from the first or second floor landing.

There are six luxury studio apartments each with a broad balcony giving a mesmerising view of the Bentota River where fishermen linger during the day and lights twinkle like stars at night.

Each apartment has a double bed, A/C, a kitchenette, with fridge, cooking facilities, kettle and crockery and cutlery. There is also a settee and dining table and chairs made out of grained coconut timber, a television and free WiFi. In the en-suite bathroom there is a power-shower with hot water, a hair dryer and bathroom amenities.

A seventh, larger apartment, perhaps more suitable for the business visitor, has a long view of the main street of Aluthgama, busy during the day but quiet at night.

For all apartments, bed linen and towels are provided and refreshed every two days. Housekeeping service, included in the room rate, is carried out each morning. A washing machine and ironing facilities are available communally as are extra kitchen facilities such as a storage refrigerator, a gas oven, and a landing lounge.

The Pier 88 Nebula Garden Restaurant and Bar adjoins the apartments for riverside dining and drinking, and with takeaway service to the apartments also available. Household supplies are available from the Nebula Supermarket while fresh vegetables could be obtained from the town’s market next door.

There is a lot to do and see within easy reach of the apartments including river cruises, fishing expeditions, water sports, village tours, home and garden visits, and swimming from the Bentota Beach. Three wheeler taxis (tuk-tuks) are available for hire through Nebula Supermarket and airport pickup (allow three hours for the road journey) can be arranged for new arrivals. Off-road parking is possible.
